Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Umatilla, Oregon. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to administer tests. Usually, hair samples from the crown of the head or body ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches are utilized. Hair testing detects drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allows for other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been adopted for drug assessments. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation situations. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is the extensive detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection method, and minimal risk of tampering. However, urine tests still excel at detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. A long-term record of alcohol and other drug consumption is provided by hair, which captures biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is simple to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 strands (roughly comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any additional documentation not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive findings need subsequent confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging techniques to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Hard to falsify: Altering hair drug test results is highly challenging, thus ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It charts drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A time span of roughly 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations generally incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth attributes can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
