Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Umpqua, Oregon. Those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment can rely on Accredited Drug Testing, which offers specialty hair testing services across various cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the head, or body hair could be used. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a standard method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by businesses with strict no-drug-use policies, legal authorities, and probationers, with benefits including a wider detection window, up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that significantly reduces chances of cheating. However, for recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial handling of a sample into the laboratory's infrastructure. This process includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. While screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be acceptable in legal proceedings. Any samples that test positive in screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is positively flagged during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: It is very challenging to adulterate a hair drug test, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not on the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Umpqua, OR, hair follicle tests offer a distinct advantage over urine tests with prolonged detection periods of substance use. Unlike their urine counterparts, hair tests span up to 90 days, giving professionals a broader view of usage patterns. This robust detection capability provides accuracy, especially in identifying habitual substance use, a key feature for many employers.

Employers in Umpqua find reliability in hair testing as it tracks drug consumption over extended periods compared to urine tests. This offers an in-depth review of a person's history, thus aiding in making more informed decisions regarding employment and compliance with workplace policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Umpqua, OR, is unparalleled, capturing substance use up to 90 days prior. This capability presents a comprehensive view of an individual's drug habits, aiding employers in evaluating substance histories more effectively than urine tests, facilitating better informed hiring decisions.

For employers in Umpqua, this extended window allows for a detailed examination of a candidate's past drug use. Compared to typical urine tests, hair analysis provides an expansive timeline, thereby enhancing the accuracy of background checks and ensuring a drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
