In Willamina, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. Specializing in hair tests, we provide access to testing facilities in cities Nationwide. For most evaluations, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific analysis options.

Recently, the method of drug screening has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer this over traditional urine tests. It serves those with zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation. The main benefit lies in its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it challenging to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more precise for screenings of recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives substances over time, capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, it is somewhat challenging to tamper with, and it is convenient to transport.

A segment of hair 1.5 inches long consisting of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and validation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used instead. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of processing a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry required that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody.

The Screening step conducts a preliminary check for the presence of drugs. Screening provides an economical means to eliminate drug use in most cases, but confirmation is needed for any positive result to hold up in legal situations. Samples that return presumptive positives during Screening must proceed to a secondary confirmation.

For Screening-positive samples, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from the hair at lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), therefore, making hair drug screening the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before conducting Confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleaned as indicated. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to adulterate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative methods.
  • Results variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
