Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Yamhill, Oregon. For individuals needing drug or alcohol tests through hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this method, with testing sites available in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Testing is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair analysis options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent as a method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair tests to conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored due to their effectiveness with employers who enforce strict drug-free policies, as well as courts and individuals under probation. Their key advantage includes detecting drug use for up to 90 days, utilizing a supervised collection process that is virtually immune to tampering. However, for capturing recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the preferable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by trapping biomarkers in the strands. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to about 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 strands of hair (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the recommended sample size for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or over 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the hair sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be collected. "Head hair" should be interpreted as scalp hair only, whereas "body hair" encompasses other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing phase of incorporating a sample into the lab's system. This step involves verifying the sample's secure sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data recording not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substance abuse. It is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples; however, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptively positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which span a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's extremely challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a use pattern over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing protocols.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Even though referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
