Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Yoder, Oregon. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with facilities available in every city nationwide for conducting hair tests. The requirement is about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair taken from the crown or body can be used in most instances. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs for other substances.

Over recent years, hair follicle tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many companies, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are now opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine analyses. Hair tests are essential for employers enforcing stringent drug-free policies, the courts, and individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended period—up to 90 days. The sampling process is directly supervised, minimizing cheating possibilities. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use in the immediate past five days, urine tests still hold accuracy supremacy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are now recognized as a significant means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The fibers of growing hair strands capture biomarkers, allowing hair to offer an extensive history of alcohol and drug use. When samples are clipped near the scalp, they deliver an alcohol and drug detection timeframe extending up to around three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, tricky to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's girth) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair—ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale for the specimen's weight measurement is recommended. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By 'head hair', we mean only scalp hair. Body hair denotes all non-scalp types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Drug testing in laboratories follows four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into a lab's system, which includes confirming its appropriate sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing additional data entry not addressed by an electronic custody chain.

Screening provides an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Though a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any presumptively positive samples proceed to a secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs from hair are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), demonstrating why hair drug testing is notably complex.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for confirming any positive screening outcome. Any presumptively positive results undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption over as much as 90 days, unlike the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Cheating difficulty: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It indicates drug use patterns chronologically, not simply recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detecting drugs in hair typically requires 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
