Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Allenwood, Pennsylvania. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with centers in all cities Nationwide ready to conduct the examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body is needed. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored analysis options.

Recently, drug tests increasingly involve hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers. Their main advantage is the longer detection timeline—up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests are more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair samples can reveal substance presence for a period of approximately three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. Referring to head hair implies scalp hair exclusively, while body hair comprises all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a laboratory encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift assessment for substance misuse. While Screening provides an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples exhibiting presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more trustworthy results.
  • Supplies chronological data: It reveals a history of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other methodologies.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
