Based in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. If hair or alcohol testing is required, their expertise in hair testing is complemented by a vast network of centers across U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for testing. Various analyses are available, including drugs and ETG alcohol tests.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug screening in recent times. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair testing over urine. This method benefits from a longer detection window of up to 90 days, involves an observed collection, and provides security against tampering. Yet, for detecting drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of hair strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within roughly a three-month period. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to contaminate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 strands of hair (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal portion of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test sample in the lab comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This involves checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive result needs confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a confirmatory test.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening as a methodology.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It offers a record of drug use over time, unlike tests that show only recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
