Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments at Arcadia University, PA. If you require a hair or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations and boasts facilities in every city Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, either from the head's crown or body, for analysis. Hair can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, there's been an increase in using hair follicle tests instead of the usual urine analysis method. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts are turning to hair tests as an alternative to urine tests. Businesses with strict no-drug policies, judicial procedures, and individuals on probation are primary users of hair follicle testing. A primary advantage is the extended drug detection period, usually up to 90 days, done in a monitored setting, and is difficult to tamper with. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The growing hair fiber captures biomarkers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an estimated 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation as the primary steps.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial integration into a lab's system, confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any further data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, efficient analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate additional validation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing uniquely challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used to validate any positive screen results. Prior to confirmation, all suspected positive samples undergo a wash. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen by CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It delivers a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing brings a new standard to drug screenings in Arcadia University, PA. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair testing provides superior detection accuracy and reliability. Its greater accuracy in identifying drug use makes it a preferred choice for those seeking more comprehensive results, revealing usage up to 90 days back.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
