Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Aspers, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this method and boasts testing facilities across all American cities. To conduct a hair test, one must usually have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or other body parts. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, the inclination towards hair follicle drug tests has grown. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine methods. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance drug policies and serve courts and probationers. A key advantage is their extended detection period, which tracks drug use for up to 90 days in a monitored process, minimizing tampering risks. However, for recent use, within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a significant instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a chronic record of substance and alcohol levels by embedding biomarkers within the fiber matrix of the evolving hair filament. When sampled adjacent to the scalp, hair can deliver as much as a 3-month detection horizon for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both preliminary and definitive testing. For EtG, extended panels, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a precision jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory processing for a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase equates to the initial lab processing of a specimen. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any pending data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening represents an initial overview for substances of abuse. While economical as a preliminary step to exclude substance usage in most samples, a positive screening needs verification to be legally acceptable in court. Any samples with tentative positive results in Screening underscore the necessity for a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the preliminary specimen for Extraction. At this junction, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), increasing the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positives undergo washing as warranted before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is overseen within both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair parameters and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses offer a detection span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with reduced detection spans.
  • Resistant to deception: It's notably challenging to deceive a hair drug analysis, thereby increasing result reliability.
  • Records historic data: It offers a timeline of substance consumption rather than just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Detection in hair requires roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", this analysis inspects the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Aspers, PA Hair testing stands out for its extended detection period compared to traditional urine tests, offering a broader timeline for identifying substance use. While urine tests might pinpoint recent drug use, hair tests excel in uncovering long-term patterns of substance consumption, making them particularly valuable for employers who need thorough insights.

The reliability and superior detection capabilities of hair follicle tests ensure an accurate portrayal of an individual's substance history. This makes them ideal for environments demanding stringent drug use policies, leaving little room for maneuvering around the system due to their rigorous and precise nature.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Aspers, PA One of the most compelling advantages of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe, which spans up to 90 days. This broad window allows employers to observe a more complete picture of an individual's substance use history, far surpassing the limitations of shorter-term tests like those using urine.

By opting for hair testing, companies gain access to vital information about the potential ongoing substance use, assisting them in making informed decisions regarding employment and monitoring. This longevity in detecting substances makes hair testing a robust tool for those enforcing drug-free environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Aspers, PA The design of hair follicle tests inherently reduces the possibility of sample tampering, ensuring that the results obtained are both reliable and indisputable. The rigorous collection process, coupled with the difficulty in altering hair samples, provides employers with peace of mind that the data is accurate and reflective of true usage patterns.

This resistance to manipulation makes hair testing an invaluable asset for institutions that require unassailable evidence of drug history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
