Located in Baden, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests, we have centers nationwide for conducting these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, used in most scenarios. Hair testing is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly favored for drug testing. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often choose these tests. Hair tests have the major advantage of detecting drugs over extended periods, usually up to 90 days, using an observed collection process, which is tough to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a usage history of up to around three months for alcohol and various drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the sample is less prone to tampering, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, the equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types of hair (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps involved in processing a laboratory drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory’s workflow. This step involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional information not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is essentially a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers an economical way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive finding must be confirmed for it to be court-admissible. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening need further verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex testing method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

The benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test is performed on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle located under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Exploring the merits of hair follicle testing in Baden, PA, its superiority over urine testing is evident in its enhanced accuracy and dependability. Hair tests outperform urine tests in detecting drug use across extended periods, establishing themselves as more dependable.

The detailed detection accuracy of hair tests provides an added layer of reliability, rendering them favorable over urine tests, which might miss extended substance use timelines.

Extended Detection Window

In Baden, PA, the extensive detection window offered by hair follicle testing provides visibility into drug use over an impressive 90-day period. Employers gain a thorough understanding of an applicant’s or employee’s substance history.

This extended timeframe is invaluable, offering insights into consistent drug habits rather than merely recent consumption, a crucial distinction for comprehensive assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
