Accredited Drug Testing offers inclusive hair follicle drug testing services in Bauerstown, Pennsylvania. If hair or alcohol testing is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses, with facilities in cities nationwide ready to perform these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing solutions.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for detecting drug use. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests assist employers in maintaining zero-tolerance policies against drug use, suitable for courts and individuals on probation. Hair follicle tests are preferred due to their longer detection span, up to 90 days, executed with a monitored collection to deter cheating. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Observing hair testing as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption, it records a long-term history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, relatively tough to compromise, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. When it comes to EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in processing a drug test outcome in a laboratory setting include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with initially handling a sample within a laboratory system. This process checks that the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening is the first swift review for drugs of abuse. Although Screening economically eliminates drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If a sample reveals presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirming any positive screening outcome occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive finding undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas the urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
