In Beavertown, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our experts specialize in hair assessments, and our centers are present in every city across the nation to conduct such tests. Most circumstances require that you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or other body hair. These tests can measure drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for unique hair testing needs.

Recently, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle tests. A variety of employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary individuals favor this approach. Hair follicle tests offer a key advantage due to their extended 90-day detection period, necessitate observed samples, and reduce the risk of cheating. Yet, for detecting drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We propose using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all non-scalp hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for the presence of drugs. Screening is an economical tool to exclude drug use in most samples. However, a positive screen requires further confirmation to be legally valid. Samples returning positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting a greater challenge in hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive in Screening undergo a pre-confirmation wash as needed. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reflect drug use over a span of up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter window offered by urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Tracks historical consumption: Provides insights into a person's drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is common, but the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
