Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Belmont, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with facilities available in cities across the nation. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for testing. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified hair test options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug screenings. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts request a hair drug test rather than the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug evaluations support zero-tolerance drug use policies for employers, judicial systems, and probation cases. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection up to 90 days, collected in a direct observation process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It provides a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a potential detection period of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of scalp hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. Head hair pertains strictly to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample's initial processing in a lab's system, which involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. Although it is an affordable method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Presumptive positives in Screening demand further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, substances are derived from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug detection the most challenging method to execute.

Confirming any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Detects drug use for up to 3 months, unlike the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, allowing for more precise results.
  • Provides usage history: Offers a usage pattern of drugs over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Costly: Typically, hair drug tests cost more compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
