Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Berrysburg, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in such testing, and we accommodate with centers in every major city nationwide. Typically, hair length on the head or body ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches suffices for the test. We provide analyses for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing alternatives.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Employers, judicial authorities, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly prioritizing hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Used by entities that observe strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers, the hair follicle drug test boasts a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, with samples gathered under observation, rendering deceit virtually impossible. Nonetheless, when detecting recent usage within a five-day period, the urine test remains unrivaled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the growing hair fiber. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence up to a 90-day period. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is the suggested amount. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is prudent. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent mass of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory procedure principally consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation phases.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's database, confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening executes a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it's an affordable approach to dismiss drug use across most samples, a positive finding must be corroborated for legal acceptance. Samples exhibiting presumptive positivity during Screening require a confirming analysis.

Upon a presumptively positive Screening result, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and subjected to Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternate methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, rendering hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All such samples are washed as deemed necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify substance usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a comprehensive view of substance use behavior over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent activity: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
