Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in the area of Bethany, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of testing for drugs or alcohol through hair samples, we are the experts you can count on, with centers located nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp, but body hair can also be used. Our tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored options.

Over the last few years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over urine tests. This method is especially favored by organizations with strict drug policies, legal courts, and individuals under legal supervision. The main advantage is its ability to detect drug use over an extended 90-day period, using an observed collection method that makes cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting very recent usage, within the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. This method captures a historical timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding markers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained nearest the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, slightly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximating the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. This can be measured using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. Here, head hair denotes only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The crucial stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial inclusion into the lab system. It involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data recording missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary scan for illicit substances. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use across most samples, a positive screen requires further confirmation for court validity. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require secondary validation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is extracted for further examination. In this extraction phase, substances are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the toughest methods to execute.

Confirmation for positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are rinsed before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, a longer period than urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The integrity of a hair drug test is higher, making it resistant to cheating.
  • Reflects usage trend: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become discernible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth variability can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation targets the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
