Accredited Drug Testing in Blanchard, Pennsylvania offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. For those requiring testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair follicle tests, with facilities available in cities across the country to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is used. This test can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance detection. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair testing to the standard urine test. Employers with no drug tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs utilize hair tests. The major advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window for drug use, typically up to three months, gathered through an observed collection method, making deception nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most precise when detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a potent tool, hair testing is effective in detecting drug and alcohol use. Offering a long-term record, hair captures biomarkers within its strands as it grows. When extracted near the scalp, hair shows a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp, provides about 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair isn't an option, equivalent body hair is acceptable. Head hair pertains to scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the sample's initial processing into a laboratory system, ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any extra data not entered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift check for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-effective method to discount drug usage in most samples. However, to be court-admissible, a positive screen needs confirmation. Any samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening require secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge methodologically.

Confirmation of any positive screening result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests track drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical recount: It supplies a timeline of drug use over an extended period, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become discernible in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other types of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and unique hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
