Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Braddock, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the country to conduct a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Lately, drug testing techniques have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine examinations. Employers with strict drug use policies, courts, and probation officials utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, collected in a supervised setting, making it hard to falsify. Yet, for drug use detection in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained prominence as a robust means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection span for substances like alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental steps involved in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial step of processing a sample within a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any pending data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for drugs. While it offers an economical method to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for it to be valid in legal settings. Any samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to compromise: Compromising a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: There is about a 5-7 day delay before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Distinctions in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
