Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle testing for drugs in Bradfordwoods, Pennsylvania. For those in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate tailored hair testing specifications.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly prevalent in recent years for drug analysis. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, judicial authorities, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its lengthier detection window, up to 90 days. Sample collection is monitored, minimizing the risk of tampering. It's important to note, however, that for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely regarded as a crucial resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance exposure by capturing biomarkers within the hair's structural fibers as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over the past 90 days. This method is easy to collect, challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. To conduct EtG, additional analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent measure of body hair can be substituted. In this context, "head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result consist of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This process verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening acts as an initial assessment for detecting drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for clearing the majority of samples, a confirmed positive screen is required for legal validity. Samples indicating a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, a portion of the initial specimen is further processed for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis particularly challenging to execute.

Confirming any positive screening result is achieved through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples indicating a presumptive positive result are washed accordingly. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter assessment period.
  • High resistance to tampering: The complexity of cheating a hair test contributes to more reliable findings.
  • Insight into usage patterns: Hair testing offers insight into substance usage trends over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become recognizable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur greater costs compared to alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", this examination actually evaluates the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
