Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these tests, operating centers nationwide to meet your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for testing. Our hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has increasingly become part of drug verification routines. It's favored by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts as an alternative to conventional urine assessments. This method is employed by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. A key advantage is its extensive drug use detection window, lasting up to 90 days, coupled with supervised sample collection to ensure integrity, making deception almost impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting the most recent drug use, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample weighing 150mg is recommended. It is advisable to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, body hair can be used as an equivalent alternative. Head hair specifically refers to the hair on the scalp, while body hair pertains to all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial stage of processing a sample within a lab's system. This includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary and cost-efficient assessment for drugs of abuse. Though it efficiently excludes drug usage in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples testing presumptively positive require further confirmation.

For samples showing preliminary positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Challenging to evade: Evading a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides past usage data: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Detectability in hair takes around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," this test analyzes the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
