Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct a test. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly featured hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, law courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer these over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation programs frequently employ hair tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, collected in a supervised manner, making it nearly unfeasible to manipulate. However, for usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered from just above the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month observation period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG enhancements, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. In instances where scalp hair is unavailable, an identical volume of body hair may be acquired. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen within a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the specimen's seal and correct shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While an economic method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result requires validation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Tracks historical consumption: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drug detection in hair takes around 5-7 days to manifest.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
