Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug testing services in Brookville, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, having centers across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other bespoke analysis options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have been included more often for drug testing purposes. Employers, courts, and health professionals dealing with substance abuse prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are used by zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and for probation monitoring. The main advantage is an extended detection period of up to 90 days, via an observed process that's nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use screened within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands as hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug usage for up to about three months. Hair is easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A hair specimen of 1.5 inches containing around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. By "head hair," we mean only scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to all other kinds including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test outcomes consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any extra data not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial brief assessment for substance use. While this method is affordable for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be valid in judicial proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation where necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Drug use can be identified in hair for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making results more accurate.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a pattern of drug usage over a duration, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
