Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Browntown, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialization in hair testing makes us the go-to provider, with nationwide centers available to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is required for the test. Our hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In the last few years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine testing methods. This preference stems from hair follicle tests being ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as for courts and probation contexts. The standout advantage is the extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, using an observed collection method, making it nearly immune to tampering, although for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as a vital approach for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can offer up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, rather challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system, which entails ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial and rapid assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to discount drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for it to be valid in legal contexts. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much inferior concentration than when using methodologies such as urine or oral fluid, emphasizing why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology.

Positive Screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Any presumptive positives undergo washing as required before Confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection scope.
  • Challenging to deceive: The difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test ensures more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent experimentation.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects such as hair color and individual growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
