In Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. If required for detecting drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing facilities available in every city across the nation. For most assessments, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair assessments can check for substances, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

The trend of using hair follicle drug tests has been on the rise in recent years. This method is preferred by employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation utilize it for its extensive detection window of up to 90 days. Although it offers unbeatable accuracy and is hard to falsify, for drug use in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair holds a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A specimen collection of 1.5 inches involving about 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests above 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers only to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab's process. This process confirms the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not provided by an electronic tracking system.

Screening conducts an initial assessment for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be acceptable in legal situations. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than methods like urine or oral fluid testing, highlighting why hair drug screening is one of the hardest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive are washed prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to reviews under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a reduced detection window.
  • Challenge to manipulate results: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insights: It offers a drug use pattern over a timeframe rather than just capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection for recent intake: Drugs generally take 5-7 days post-use to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other drug test options.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests offer numerous advantages over traditional urine tests in Bryn Mawr, PA. One of the most significant benefits is their extended detection period. While urine tests typically identify substances within days, hair tests trace drug use over several months. This makes them invaluable for employers and authorities requiring a broader look at someone's substance habits.

Another compelling factor is the accuracy hair tests provide. They are less susceptible to contamination and tampering compared to urine tests, which often fall victim to adulteration. As a result, hair testing gives a more truthful picture of an individual's drug history, thereby providing more reliable evidence for decision-makers.

Extended Detection Window

Featuring an extended detection window, hair follicle tests in Bryn Mawr, PA provide a detailed view of drug use stretching up to 90 days. This prolonged timeframe equips employers with essential insights about an individual's engagement with substances over time, beyond the capabilities of standard testing methods, hence ensuring informed decision-making in hiring processes.

The capacity to review an extended duration is significant from a safety and productivity perspective. Employers can be confident about maintaining a drug-free workplace as hair testing accurately outlines prolonged drug use, giving them the edge in maintaining workplace integrity and professionalism compared to shorter-term testing alternatives.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bryn Mawr, PA, hair follicle testing stands as a tamper-resistant solution, significantly reducing the likelihood of sample adulteration. Such a method ensures unquestionable results, maintaining the integrity of the testing process. Unlike other tests, hair samples provide resistance to external tempering efforts, offering authentic results beneficial for stringent drug policies.

The reliance on hair for testing purposes helps eliminate common evasion tactics often seen with other methods. The ingenuity of the hair follicle test is not only in its secure and reliable approach but in how it upholds the credibility of findings, which is essential for legal and employment-related assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
