Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Caln, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with testing centers in every city across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required for testing. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific tests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has often been adopted as a common method for drug screening. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors are opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, by court systems, and by probationary supervision. The main advantage is its extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, conducted in observed conditions, making it nearly infallible. Nevertheless, when assessing recent drug use (within the past 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers within a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, providing a historical record of alcohol and other substances. Hair taken close to the scalp offers around a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It's easily collected, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100 mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG additions, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150 mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types, including facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The drug testing process at a laboratory involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The initial phase, Accessioning, integrates a sample into the lab system. This entails confirming that the sample was secured and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entries not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

During the Screening phase, there's a preliminary rapid screening for drugs. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates validation for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptively positive result in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than seen in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive findings from the screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as required. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows usage patterns: They reveal a timeline of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
