Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing centers scattered across various cities Nationwide ready to carry out hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

Recently, drug testing procedures increasingly encompass hair follicle drug assessments. Many workplaces, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-drug tolerance policies, legal authorities, and individuals with probationary terms due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, their observed collection process, and their resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent drug use within a five-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When obtained near the scalp, it provides an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment amounting to about 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, expanded panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" indicates any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening comprises an initial assessment for prohibited substances. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to exclude drugs in most samples, a positive outcome must be validated for court use. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, more hair is sourced from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower levels than other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting why hair screening is the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any screening positive results. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed if required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and follows ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug exams track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is extremely hard to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It uncovers drug use patterns over time, rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug examinations tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Carbondale, PA, hair follicle testing is preferred over urine tests for its superior accuracy and reliability. These tests possess a longer detection period which urine tests lack, making them more effective.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
