Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Renowned for its comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Carnot, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our numerous centers across the nation offer such assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. We provide drug or alcohol/ETG testing, along with customized options tailored to specific needs.

In the past years, hair follicle drug tests have seen widespread adoption. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair tests over urine tests. Such tests fit zero-tolerance policies, used by courts and for probation purposes. Their chief advantage lies in detecting drugs over 90 days, ensuring an unobtrusive testing procedure that is hard to deceive. Yet, for recent usage within five days, urine tests prove most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means to uncover substance and alcohol consumption. The hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the evolving hair woven structure. Upon collection adjacent to the scalp, hair can indicate substance usage over an approximate three-month timeframe. The collection process for hair is straightforward, less susceptible to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hairs (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and analyses beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. Our reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other hair types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The comprehensive processing of a drug test result within a lab consists of the steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the foundational processing where a sample enters the lab's workflow. This step verifies the integrity of the sample's seal and shipping, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry excluded from an electronic custody system.

Screening provides an immediate review for prohibited substances. Despite being a budget-friendly method for confirming drug-free samples, a positive screen demands later validation for judicial acceptance. Any Screening results that are presumptively positive require an additional confirmation phase.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, the drug elements are retrieved from the hair at substantially lesser concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva testing), underscoring why hair drug analysis is considered particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes proceeds through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results undergo necessary washing. The lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Benefits of hair drug evaluation:

  • Extended observation period: Unlike urine tests with shorter analysis spans, hair drug tests can discover drug usage over a span of 90 days.
  • Resistant to tampering: Due to the difficulty involved in altering a hair drug test, the findings are typically more precise.
  • Establishes historical usage: It conveys a pattern of drug usage over a period rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of recognizing recent intake: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: In general, hair drug assessments cost more than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent findings: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand as opposed to the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
