Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing serves Centerport, Pennsylvania. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this area and have facilities nationwide, including in every major city, to conduct the tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for the procedure. Hair analysis is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing requirements.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly favored for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies frequently utilize hair testing, as do courts and probationary programs. The advantage of these tests is their longer detection timeframe, usually up to 90 days, gathered through an observed process. They are nearly impossible to manipulate, although urine tests remain more accurate for detecting very recent drug use, within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended retrospective view of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft. When procured near the scalp, it provides an approximate detection period of up to three months for both alcohol and various substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil), located closest to the scalp, should weigh around 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advised. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure of processing a drug test result in the laboratory encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where the sample is initially entered into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial fast assessment for potential substance abuse. While screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be lawful in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation process.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In the Extraction phase, substances are separated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any presumptively positive screenings is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests, which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests are notably resistant to manipulation, enhancing their accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: They reflect a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variations like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle test" often used colloquially for these analyses is a misnomer, as the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior accuracy and reliability. In Centerport, PA, employers and other entities benefit from longer detection windows for substances, making it difficult to subvert. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
