Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Chesterbrook, PA. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with centers in cities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is usually required. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests rather than standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted in a monitored environment, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable instrument for uncovering alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it offers up to a roughly three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise so as to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes for drug test results comprise four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's procedures. This step includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that tend to show positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, further hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than urine or oral fluid methods, thereby rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positively screened results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory method, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a much shorter detection period.
  • Challenges in evasion: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can represent a pattern of drug usage over an extended period rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually performed on the hair strand itself, not on the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
