Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a drug or alcohol hair test, we offer specialized services with centers nationwide ready to assist. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically necessary from the head or body. Hair assessments can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in recent times for substance screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over the traditional urine method. Hair tests are employed by zero-tolerance organizations, courts, and probationary programs due to their extensive 90-day drug-use detection. They are observed during collection, minimizing cheating, though urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent drug intake.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method in detecting substance use. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. If collected near the scalp, it can reveal information for about a 3-month period for both alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional options, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, armpits, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The key stages in the lab procedure of drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assay for detecting drugs of potential abuse. While Screening is an economical approach for ruling out drug consumption in many samples, any positive initial test results must be verified before they are permissible in legal settings. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for further Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples showing presumptive positives are cleaned before Confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can confirm drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer shorter detection times.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thus enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Tracks historic usage: It provides a timeline of drug use over several months, as opposed to just recent consumption.

Downsides:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs only become visible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and unique characteristics in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
