Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Churchtown, Pennsylvania. Our expertise lies in hair and alcohol testing, with facilities in cities across the nation that are capable of conducting these tests. For accurate results, you will generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from your head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, the trend toward hair follicle drug testing has grown, replacing standard urine tests among many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary programs rely on hair follicle tests for their longer detection period of up to 90 days. Collected under observation, these tests are nearly foolproof. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month span for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to falsify, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the ideal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional factors, and/or thorough analysis beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When referring to head hair, this denotes scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory’s drug testing process include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step in processing a sample within a lab’s framework. This phase ensures the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drug detection. While Screening is a cost-effective means to dismiss drug presence in the majority of samples, confirmation is necessary for any positive results to be valid in a legal context. Samples that test positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a positive result at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any screening result indicating positivity is validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicative of positivity undergo a cleansing before confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair framework and meets the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus increasing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug usage over a period, in addition to recent usage information.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes around 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Churchtown, PA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing by offering superior detection capabilities. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
