Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Churchville, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing and our presence in cities Nationwide facilitate this need. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has grown in recent years. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are used by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection period, generally up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision to prevent tampering. For drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers during growth. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal substance use over an approximately 3-month span. The collection process is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (approximate thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equal amount from body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The lab processing of drug test results comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails integrating the sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing entries lacking in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial drug abuse check. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening require further confirmation.

With a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair from the specimen is prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at a much lower concentration than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the hardest to perform.

Positive screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positives are cleaned as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Strengths of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period.
  • Limited potential for cheating: Hair tests are hard to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It provides a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform urine testing in Churchville, PA? The primary advantage is in its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests provide a more extensive history of substance use than urine tests. Employers benefit from a clearer understanding of employees' habits, which aids in fostering a productive and drug-free workplace.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests are less susceptible to temporary abstinence aimed at falsifying results. Hair tests detect drug use over a more extended period, thus uncovering patterns that standardized urine tests might miss. This makes them a preferred choice for organizations prioritizing accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Churchville, PA benefits greatly from the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing. This method identifies drug use over a much longer period, up to 90 days, providing a thorough insight into an individual's substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
