Located in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol via hair analysis, our specialization ensures precision, with facilities spread nationwide capable of hair assessments. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specific analysis requirements.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are choosing hair tests over the traditional urine alternatives. These tests are favored by those enforcing strict drug-free policies, as they provide an extended detection window of up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for testing drug usage in the last five days, urine tests remain the go-to due to their precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now recognized as an influential tool in identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by retaining biomarkers within the hairs as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and uncomplicated to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG addons or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, this implies scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing in a lab's system. This process includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While it is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Presumptively positive samples from Screening need a secondary verification.

Should a sample return as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to fabricate: It's quite tough to fabricate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a trend of substance use over time, not just recent incidences.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variation: Aspects like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
