Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Cochranton, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization enables us to conduct these hair tests efficiently. With testing centers available nationwide, you can access a hair test wherever you are. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is needed. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Lately, the hair follicle drug test has become a popular method for drug screening. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer this method over the traditional urine test. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies, including some courts and probation services, are opting for hair follicle drug tests. These tests offer the advantage of detecting drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days, an observation-based collection process, and being almost impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. A sample taken near the scalp supplies a detection window of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to procure, largely resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in dimension to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg is made. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is not attainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other variants of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The major steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a specimen into a laboratory’s framework, ensuring the sample’s seal and correct shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent in a digital chain of custody process.

Screening performs a preliminary swift evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a favorable screen must be verified to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any screening positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as warranted. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Main Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug analyses can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses feature a narrower detection period.
  • Cheating challenges: Cheating a hair drug analysis is notably difficult, increasing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historic data: It unveils a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent instances.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot track recent consumption: Drugs need roughly 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair pigmentation and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
