In Cokeburg, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol evaluations, we have testing facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a common method for drug screening, surpassing the traditional urine tests. This method is often mandated by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists due to its extensive detection period, observing drug use over 90 days, collected under supervision. Its near-impossibility to cheat makes it a strong choice, while urine tests remain preferable for detecting recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we are referring exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning engages the initial process of inputting a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive in the Screening phase, further hair is removed from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Evidence of historical use: It can show a pattern of substance use over time rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Cokeburg, PA surpasses urine tests in accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests that detect recent drug use, hair tests unveil past substance intake, offering a more comprehensive analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
