Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Collinsburg, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by facilities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or other body parts is needed. Our hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with drug-free policies, legal courts, and probation services often choose hair tests. The significant benefit is their ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, featuring an observed collection that’s nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer a prolonged history of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of actively developing hair. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can yield up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will suffice for 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a proportional amount of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug testing outcome in a lab encompasses four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary integration of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This involves checking if the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that show a preliminary positive in Screening require a further confirmation.

If a specimen indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than via other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screenings the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is notably hard to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug use over a time frame, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
