Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Colony Park, PA. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, maintaining testing locations throughout all cities across the country capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the scalp or body is required for testing. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing criteria.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation often utilize hair follicle tests. The primary advantage of hair tests is the extended detection timeframe, usually encompassing up to 90 days, with an observed collection procedure that is nearly uncheatable. However, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective method, hair testing is valuable for discovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a repository for evidence of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (resembling the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, providing the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest checking the specimen's weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair types (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial input of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be acceptable in legal contexts. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is governed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to bypass a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical context: It offers insight into the pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth patterns can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing shines over traditional urine tests in Colony Park due to its superior detection capabilities and reliability. Hair tests offer a longer detection window, high accuracy, and minimal risk of manipulation. In comparison, urine tests often fail to detect drug use that occurred longer than a few days earlier, providing less comprehensive results for employers.

Extended Detection Window

One major advantage of hair follicle testing in Colony Park is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use history. By providing a comprehensive view of an employee's or applicant's drug use over such a broad span, hair tests serve as a reliable tool for informed decision-making in hiring and workforce management.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests significantly reduce the risk of sample adulteration in Colony Park, offering a tamper-resistant method for detecting drug use. By eliminating common issues like substitution or dilution found in other testing methods, such as urine tests, hair tests provide reliable and unquestionable results, ensuring the integrity of the testing process and fostering trust among employers and test subjects.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
