In Conemaugh, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol screening, we operate testing centers nationwide, ready to meet your needs. Hair samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of length from the crown or body. Options include tests for substances, ETG, and custom analyses.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for its effectiveness. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer it over urine tests. It covers a 90-day detection window, uses observed collecting, and resists cheating efforts. Still, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests maintain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair provides a detection period of nearly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes checking the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift evaluation for substance abuse. Screening is a cost-effective method for eliminating drug use for most samples, but a positive result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples with positive results in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample records a positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen for Extraction. In this step, substances are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug testing is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analysis can identify substance use for an interval of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a limited detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It yields a trend of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes around 5-7 days for substances to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing excels over traditional urine tests in Conemaugh, PA due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. The technology behind hair testing allows for a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use, capturing a longer history of drug intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
