Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Congruity, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with centers in cities across the country capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts is required. Hair testing is able to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with offering other tailored testing options.

In recent trends, utilizing hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Used by entities enforcing zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and people on probation, hair follicle tests offer a significant advantage by providing a detection window of up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making it nearly impossible to evade. However, for substance use detection within the immediate past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands, offering a historical record of substance use over an extended period. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of alcohol and drug use for roughly three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair should be obtained. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four principal stages involved in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the preliminary step of entering a sample into the lab system. This step involves confirming the sample's integrity and proper shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to identify potential substance use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. Samples initially testing positive in Screening must be further confirmed.

Should Screening yield a presumptive positive result, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are thoroughly washed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: The tests reveal drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
