Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle substance testing in Cornwall, Pennsylvania. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in such tests, boasting facilities for hair analysis across all Nationwide cities. In most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair can be utilized. The tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair analysis services.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become increasingly prevalent in drug screening. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are shifting from standard urine tests to hair drug evaluations. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation commonly utilize hair follicle tests. This method's chief advantage lies in its prolonged drug detection window, reaching up to 90 days, collected with supervision, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for recent drug use up to 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers while growing, offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption. When sourced from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analysis beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. In cases where scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results generally involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory’s records. It ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary, swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is an affordable method to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive result from screening requires verification for legal admissibility. Samples that show a positive result in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, another portion of the provided hair is processed for Extraction. This stage involves the extraction of drugs at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), warranting hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive results from initial screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives may require cleansing. The whole procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection durations.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical data: Hair tests reveal drug usage patterns over time, instead of solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
