Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Courtney, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with locations across the nation, including all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to your specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method of conducting drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as the courts, and those on probation favor hair follicle testing. Its extended detection period of up to 90 days and nearly unbreakable integrity make it valuable, though urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to hair from other areas (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of hair drug testing involves four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage, where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is cost-effective and can exclude drug usage in most cases, positive results must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus ensuring results are more precise.
  • Long-term usage patterns: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent drug ingestion: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
