In Crabtree, PA, Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive approach to hair follicle drug screening. For those needing a hair or alcohol assessment, our centers, operational throughout the Nation, are adept in executing quality hair tests. Adequate lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches are necessary for these assessments. They facilitate the detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers rely on these tests. Their primary advantage is a prolonged detection window of about 90 days, through an observed collection process that is hard to tamper with. Nevertheless, for more immediate detection, within 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by incorporating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, it offers about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. It’s best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially registering a sample within a lab's framework. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data recording not provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary review for substance abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient strategy to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive finding must be verified for it to be accepted in legal settings. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening mandate subsequent verification.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are retrieved from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any initial positive result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating is remarkably difficult with hair drug tests, yielding more accurate outcomes.
  • Creates historical records: These tests can chart a pattern of drug use over time rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing strategies.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While these are sometimes known as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers superior benefits over traditional urine testing methods. In Crabtree, PA, these tests deliver enhanced detection accuracy, making it increasingly challenging to conceal substance use history. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent use, hair screening provides a clear picture of drug activity over a prolonged period, ensuring employers can trust the reliability of results.

Extended Detection Window

In Crabtree, PA, hair follicle testing's extended detection window is a game-changer. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, it provides a thorough view, vital for employers assessing an individual's substance history. This wider timeframe not only offers insights into habitual use patterns but also supports informed decision-making in workforce management.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Crabtree, PA, sets a robust standard in tamper resistance. The methodology inherently diminishes the chance of adulteration, ensuring results are indisputable. Unlike other testing techniques, manipulating hair specimens proves exceedingly difficult, reinforcing the integrity and reliability of the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
