Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Dauberville, Pennsylvania. If a hair or alcohol evaluation is needed, our expertise in hair testing is supported by centers across all U.S. cities, ready to administer these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is typically required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer personalized testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine assessments. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers often utilize hair tests due to their key advantage: detecting drug use over an extended period of typically 90 days, with direct sampling making tampering highly difficult. However, for detecting recent use within five days, urine tests remain the preferred approach.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust tool in identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair stores a long-term history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing fiber. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, an optimal sample for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or scenarios exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's prudent to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be acquired. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initiation of processing a sample into a lab’s system. This process checks that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary test for illegal substances. Though cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples showing a tentative positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

For samples with a provisional positive in Screening, more hair is sourced from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair with a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a provisional positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is highly challenging to defraud a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers past usage patterns: It can highlight a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
