Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Du Bois, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist in the field, with testing centers available in cities across the nation to conduct hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other testing needs.

In recent times, the popularity of drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. This form of testing is increasingly required by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals in place of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probation services prefer hair follicle tests. Their key advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, and the difficulty in tampering, although urine tests remain reliable for recent usage detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG additions or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equal amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The process for laboratory analysis during a drug test includes four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This procedure verifies if the sample has been sealed and sent correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it cost-effectively excludes drug use in most samples, any positive results must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positively during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adhered to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests typically have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: The probability of deceiving a hair drug test is quite low, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can track a pattern of drug use over time, unlike tests that only confirm immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs generally become noticeable in hair around 5-7 days subsequent to use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
