Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments, Accredited Drug Testing is active in Eagle Lake, Pennsylvania. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol evaluation via hair analysis, we excel in this discipline, with facilities across the nation. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp is required, though body hair is an alternative. The tests can be catered to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Lately, drug evaluations increasingly rely on hair follicle testing. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts are favoring it over traditional urine analyses. Hair tests benefit zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and those on probation, due to their extended detection span of up to 90 days and the observed collection method, which minimizes tampering risks. However, for recent substance use, urine tests remain optimal for the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers of drugs and alcohol within the strands as they grow, offering a timeline of usage. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period extending up to three months for both alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of adulteration, and the samples are easy to transport.

A sample cut to 1.5 inches, with around 200 strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil), will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For expanded testing such as EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurements. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, body hair in equivalent quantity can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair; whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing to integrate into the lab system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment are intact, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional required information not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in this stage needs confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, more hair from the original sample is designated for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging procedure to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter windows of urine tests.
  • Difficulty in tampering: Due to its high resistance to tampering, hair drug testing yields more reliable results.
  • Chronological usage data: This type of testing can outline a pattern of drug consumption over an extended period, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variable results: The drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
