Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services in Eagleview, Pennsylvania. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair analysis, with testing facilities across all major cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body may be necessary. Hair exams can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing choices.

In recent times, drug testing methods now commonly involve a hair follicle drug test. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for a hair drug test over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle testing. The primary advantage of hair follicle drug testing lies in its more extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, executed in an observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to bypass. Yet, when evaluating drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests still provide the most precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term records of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both initial testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair might be gathered. When addressing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test outcome encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any further data entry absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening executes an immediate preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening economically eliminates drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, an additional hair portion is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening poses the toughest challenge.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS verifies any positive screening results. Prior to confirmation, every presumptive positive sample undergoes a washing process as needed. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the thorough laboratory procedure adheres to the standards of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments identify drug usage spanning up to 90 days, while urine assessments have a shorter detection period.
  • Complexity to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug assessment is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, beyond merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
