Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Eagleville, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers in every city nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair follicle tests. They offer a broader detection period for drug use—typically up to 90 days—collected under observed conditions and are nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a longitudinal overview of alcohol and drug use. When sourced near the scalp, the hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol exposure for roughly three months. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 strands (similar in girth to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimum quantity for both testing and confirmation purposes. For EtG augmentations, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is preferred. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen measurements. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable volume of body hair is a valid substitute. By head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all remaining hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages within lab processing of a drug testing result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing and integration into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. Although Screening helps economically negate drug use for most samples, to stand in court, a positive screen requires confirmation. Any samples with a tentative positive screening result demand further confirmation.

Should a Screening stage yield a tentative positive, additional hair from the baseline specimen is prepped for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair in concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which underscores the challenges in hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positive results are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair framework and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage over up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug testing's resistance to tampering enhances result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It outlines a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited to past use: Hair takes about 5-7 days to reveal drug presence.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform urine tests in Eagleville, PA? The superior detection accuracy and consistency of hair testing often eclipse traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
