Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in East Berwick, Pennsylvania. Need a test for drugs or alcohol? We specialize in hair testing and have centers nationwide, ready to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body can be used. Our hair tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now often require hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are mandated by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial entities, and for probation checks. They boast a longer drug use detection period—up to 90 days—are collected under supervision, and are hard to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying substance use. Hair captures a historical record of drug and alcohol consumption by enclosing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage for a period of up to three months. Hair sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirming. For EtG and tests exceeding 10 types, a 150mg sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. In this context, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. All other hair types are considered body hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages involved in lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory processing step for a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry needed beyond the electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive result is required for legal admissibility. Samples that screen as presumptive positives necessitate a confirmatory test.

Should a sample demonstrate a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), underscoring why hair drug testing demands advanced methodology.

Confirmatory tests on positive results are executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples may be washed prior to confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Allows for drug use detection up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hard to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers an overview of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drug presence in hair becomes identifiable typically after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other methods of drug screening.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", yet the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
