Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Brady, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair testing and operates testing centers across the nation where hair tests can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored options.

In recent times, conducting drug tests has increasingly involved hair follicle drug assessments. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage of this testing method is its extended drug use detection window, generally up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that is difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. It captures long-term history through biomarkers trapped in the growing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, approximately #2 pencil-sized, consisting of around 200 strands near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, suitable for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh it using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, the same amount of body hair can be used. “Head hair” specifically refers to scalp hair, while “body hair” covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes integrating a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring it's sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data if necessary, beyond electronic chain of custody information.

Screening is an initial cost-effective method to identify drug usage in most samples. However, positive screens need confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptively positive sample requires secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for Extraction, where drugs are removed at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing the most complex to perform.

Confirmation of positive results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: It shows drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Misses recent use: Drugs take nearly 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other testing forms.
  • Result variance: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
