Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug exams in East Waterford, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers are available nationwide. For accurate testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests offer assessments for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly preferred for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now choose hair tests over urine tests. They are ideal for entities with strict anti-drug policies or individuals on probation. Hair tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days through direct collection, making it difficult to tamper; however, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. Hair samples taken near the scalp can offer a detection window of roughly up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to provide 150mg of the sample. Utilization of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. In cases where scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When addressing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test result in the laboratory consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase where a sample is introduced into the laboratory’s system. This phase includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported properly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary phase for detecting drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS analyses. Before confirmation, all samples that are positive under screening are subjected to washing as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a limited detection period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical insight: It delivers an overview of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs relative to other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In East Waterford, PA, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests, providing longer detection capabilities. Employers benefit from the broader scope of hair tests, which also present fewer opportunities for sample tampering. Hair testing is unrivaled in its ability to detect drug usage over a span of months, securing accurate data pivotal for business decisions.

Hair tests offer enhanced reliability and greater accuracy in detecting prolonged substance exposure, making them an investment in safety over simplistic urine tests. The broader detection window equips companies with a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

The extensive detection window of hair follicle testing in East Waterford, PA, is a significant advantage. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
