Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Elco, Pennsylvania. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our specialty is hair testing, with facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Analysis can be done for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair tests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in testing programs. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probation officers. The key advantage lies in its extended detection range of up to 90 days, strict observation during collection, and difficulty to manipulate. For detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer close to a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is relatively challenging, and it is simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment with around 200 strands of hair (approximately resembling a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing within a laboratory consists of these four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. It includes checking whether the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug usage in most cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Every sample with a presumptive positive in Screening requires additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a complex method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete laboratory process is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a briefer detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not simply recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outperforms Urine Testing in Elco, PA is clear when considering detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing surpasses urine tests by identifying drug use long after substances leave the bloodstream, capturing a window much wider than the few days that urine tests offer. This enhanced detection period ensures more comprehensive monitoring of individuals to maintain a drug-free environment.

Employers in Elco, PA benefit from hair follicle tests' unparalleled detection accuracy, providing clearer insights compared to urine tests. By focusing on this more effective method, companies can confidently enforce substance policies, relying on the robust evidence hair testing supplies. The strategic advantages of choosing hair over urine tests are evident in the superior accuracy and reliability of results.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Elco, PA, can rely on hair follicle testing for its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. Unlike traditional methods, hair testing doesn't just show recent use but gives an overview over months, crucial for making informed decisions in hiring and maintaining workplace integrity. This long detection period is unmatched, offering a thorough insight into substance habits.

In Elco, PA, the ability of hair follicle tests to detect drug use over several months proves invaluable. It equips employers with crucial information about an individual's past behavior, fostering a safer workplace and helping to predict future substance tendencies. This expanded detection window ensures a fuller understanding of an applicant or employee's history, promoting trust and safety within any organization.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Elco, PA, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing significantly reduces the risk of adulteration, ensuring the reliability of results. This method’s robustness lies in the difficulty of altering or masking collected samples, unlike other testing methods. A meticulous collection process further guarantees the authenticity of the sample, providing unchallengeable results that uphold test integrity.

The strength of hair follicle testing in Elco, PA, is its ability to provide reliable, tamper-proof results. This security makes it a favored choice for employers keen on maintaining stringent drug-free policies. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
